Jason fights the hydra for the Golden Fleece. A seminal hero vs dragon story written by Apollonius of Rhodes in his epic work, Argonautica, written in Alexandria, Egypt in the 3rd century BC. The movie version from Columbia Pictures in 1963 owed it's fantastic hydra to the great sfx man, Ray Harryhausen. It is said in mythology that we are only as great as the obstacles we overcome. Therefore, seeing reptilian monsters at every turn in mythology, as the foil to be beaten, shows in what high regard they were held.---I.E. Luke cannot be a great Jedi until he defeats Vader, etc, etc, you choose your favorite myth. |
