CHINESE BOX TURTLE

 chinese box turtle, snakes-n-scales

In 1992 a woman called me because there was a bleeding turtle walking down her road. I drove to her house to find this animal had lost a section of it's tail and had some burns behind in rear legs. I also noticed an odd smell which wasn't immediately familiar. When it occurred to me that the date was July 5th I realized what had happened. Someone put a firecracker up this turtle's cloaca. (the smell was gun powder.) Fortunately she expelled most of it before the explosion so all she lost was a chunk of tail and she had a burned behind. Some cream, a minor tail clip and here she is today, named, of course, "Firecracker."
