Kids and animals make for interesting chemistry, wonderful learning possibilities and experiences that will last a lifetime. They can also make for the end of the teacher’s career! Esoteric problems of humane message and philosophy as well as practical problems of care, feeding, handling, and laws are a huge burden for the teacher to absorb as a non-expert.

The Live Animals in the Classroom presentation will examine the educational value and feasibility of keeping animals by children and their teachers.

The disturbing trend toward keeping animals by misinformed and inexperienced, albeit well meaning teachers, sends the wrong message to the students and teaches neither proper science fact nor conservation values. All major animal groups from the invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals will be examined for fitness as a classroom “pet,” with a few live examples in attendance. Additionally we shall look at permits needed, supplies, suppliers, available information, curriculum appropriateness and possible alternatives.

This program is presented cooperatively by Snakes-N-Scales herpetologist owner, Bill Boesenberg and Eyes of the Wild animal expert and owner, Travis Gale. These two men have a combined expertise of over 40 years keeping, caring for and presenting animals in an educational setting. They are also very well versed in keeping the information accurate and entertaining!
