Library and Museum Adult Environmental Education Programs

Public or club programs for adults in library, museum or nature center requires a speaker with skills outside the ability of most who talk to children. Snakes-N-Scales is an unique organization in many ways, but not least in our ability to serve multiple audiences. Unlike others, our background is herpetology, so we can speak, as experts, on an adult level, and with authority.

The following presentations may share a similar name or topic with programs for younger audiences, but those offered in this section will be presented for adults, with adult themes, requiring adult thought processes. Children are NOT permitted in these programs.

And here too.

Reptiles are deep in our minds and our society to a
surprising degree. For tales and stories there is, St. George slaying the dragon and becoming a universal hero; Medusa and her hair of snakes; Dracula, which means “Order of the Dragon;” For words and phrases in our language there is the word “sneak” which is the etomologically the same as the word “snake;” “crocodile tears,” which can’t be a good thing. Significances abound; in the ancient cultures and in the Bible there was the snake as evil incarnate; in the Amer-Indian mythos snakes held the key to resurrection; In China only the Emperor could use the five fingered dragon, In our modern time we have Godzilla, the nuclear guilt reptile; it isn’t hard to see that these scaly beasts hold a strange and special place
in out thinking and our culture.

Bill Boesenberg, Herpetologist,

will be your instructor, using live reptiles including some our largest, maps, art and artifacts this program looks at some of the roots of why humans have always both feared and respected reptiles. The peoples of Ancient Egypt and the Middle East, Greece and Rome, Polynesia, Medieval Europe, Japan and China, and the Modern West are touched upon.
