FRILLED SHARK

 frilled shark 1frilled shark 2

Though it does look like the "shrieking eels" from the Princess Bride movie! It’s a Frilled Shark. This shark is mostly a squid eater based on stomach contents from captured specimens. None have survived more than a few hours in human hands. They require the pressure of depth to survive. There are several extinct species that were fairly similar based on teeth fossils.

Though considered uncommon the frilled shark has an enourmous range and may actually be a great deal commoner than we think. It is found from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. It can be found off Norway, Scotland, Ireland, France, Morocco, Mauritania, Japan, Suriname, Taiwan, off New England (US), Georgia (US), Hawaii(US), California (US) Azores, New South Wales, Australia, Tasmania, Brazil, Chile, all over New Zealand and off West Africa.
