PREDATORY STRATEGIES All predators evolved adaptations to maximize their chances of catching prey, these adaptations are sometimes called strategies. (Though the animals didn’t think them up!) The variety of strategies is mind blowing; ambushing, stalking/tracking, envenomation, constriction, drowning, overpowering, and the list goes on. This program uses representative reptiles and amphibians to illustrate the fascinating interplay of behavior, physiology, experience and preference used to catch a meal.

POISONOUS AND VENOMOUS The nuclear weapon of the animal world, poisons and venoms can turn a tiny creature into a giant killer. Though unlike the human analogy, animals resort to these weapons only for defense and predation. This program will use live animals, animal artifacts, photos and diagrammatic artwork to study venomous snakes, spiders, frogs, toads, centipedes, scorpions and snails. How dangerous are they to humans? What are their survival strategies and can we live with them? (No truly dangerous live animals will used in this program.)

THE GREAT REPTILES This show brings a 5-7ft American Alligator, a 5ft Water Monitor Lizard and a 15-17ft, 80-100 lb Burmese Python, among others, to your event. These are the biggest reptiles in any show in NJ. Presented either by Snakes-N-Scales’ founder and herpetologist Bill B. or his Senior Edu-Tainer Chris Bean. Learn and be amazed with a combination of humor, awe and compassion for creatures to which most people rarely get this close.
This is good large venue program where there will be lots of people.
This show needs a lot of space, no less than 12x6 ft just for us. Not including the audience. Two six foot tables must be provided.

REPTILE RESCUE Bill B. has repaired countless turtle shells that were struck by cars, hatched endangered turtle eggs, mended broken legged frogs, nursed 100 lb pythons, pulled loosed alligators out of people’s pools, performed surgery on injured and dead mother snakes and turtles to collect the eggs for hatch and release, answered dozens of calls from local police and poison control for snake identification and capture, caught monitor lizards on the turnpike, rescued injured venomous snakes and become known as the “New Jersey Crocodile Hunter” from the Bergen Record. This program brings Bill, and company, into your school to fascinate the class with his successes and his failures in twenty years of helping the creatures many fear, but most find enthralling.

REPTILE SURVIVORS The extinction event of 65 million years ago ended the dominion of the reptiles on Earth, opening the way for the other mammals and ourselves. We know surprisingly little of the thousands of groups that once lived because what is left, the crocodilians, turtles, lizards and snakes, are but a remnant of past glory. After a brief survey of the amazing past this serial program will, in five parts, study the still incredible diversity of the last survivors of the present.
1. Origins and Ancestors- They ruled nearly every habitat on Earth, (only the oceans held real competitors,) Dinosaurs, Tylosaurs, Pterosaurs, huge Crocodilians and other were all reptiles that were the dominant creatures on the planet for 150 million years. 2. Turtles- The old ones, but a few hundred species survive but in nearly identical fashion to their most ancient relatives. “S’ necked and side-necked, terrapins, turtles and tortoises have turned being slow into an art form. This episode studies their form, function and behavior using living animals and skeletal remains. 3. Crocodilians - The supreme predators of their habitats, the largest living reptiles and belonging to the same family as the Dinosaurs, they rule the warm fresh waters of the world with only 23 species. The American Alligator, Nile Crocodile and Schneider’s Dwarf Caiman are looked at in depth; especially their amazing predatory success. 4. Lizards - The most numerous of the reptiles, these mostly small, ectothermic, creatures run alongside the endothermic birds and mammals of their niches and compete successfully for the same foods. This visit looks at strange legless lizards called Sheltipussiks, the ‘pet” lizard, the Bearded Dragon, the Komodo cousin, the intelligent Asian Water Monitor and several others. 5. Snakes- Pythons, boas, hognoses, kings, corns and anacondas; snakes transfix and repel simultaneously. The last on the scene geologically, but perhaps the most successful, these highly adapted, extremely sensitive, legless animals have slithered their way into every habitat except the coldest few. And some carry nature’s ultimate weapon.

Not only do we have a great selection of programs for your school with hundreds of animals, curriculum help, vocabulary and activities, but we also offer
Rescue-A-Reptile for the class or school— Snakes-N-Scales is unlike all other organizations of it’s kind because the animals we use are unwanted orphans that we have rescued. In some cases the animal simply needed a home and some care, but in many cases it needed medicine, surgery or more. We now give you an opportunity to join us in our mission. You may choose which animal you’d like to have as your class mascot, receive a color photo, personal story, lesson plan and some other helpful gifts from Snakes-N-Scales. Perhaps you may even be able to have the animal visit your class!! (Snakes-N-Scales is not a non-profit organization and your purchase of a sponsorship is not tax deductible.)
